UMC's April revenue closer to TSMC's

Taipei, May 9, 2000 (CENS)--United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC), Taiwan's second largest provider of wafer foundry services, recorded revenue of NT$7.37 billion in April, the closest it has come to that of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (TSMC), the world's largest provider of foundry services.

UMC announced Monday its April revenue rose 196.9% from the NT$2.482 billion registered in the same month last year. For the first four months of this year, revenue came to NT$26.683 billion, a large hike of 197.07% from the NT$8.982 billion posted in the same period of 1999.

Along with the gradual shift of manufacturing processes from 0.25-micron technology to more advanced technology of less than 0.25-micron, UMC's gross profit rate for wafer foundry services attained 46% in the first quarter and is expected to rise to more than 50% in the second half of 2000.

Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, in its latest report published early this month, estimates UMC's net earnings per share at NT$3.29 for this year and NT$5.54 for 2001, with the projected price of UMC's stock rising over the next year from NT$160 per share to NT$166.

In comparison, TSMC reaped revenue of NT$8.863 billion last month, jumping 69.2% from April last year, but declining by 10.7% from the NT$9.93 billion posted in March. The company's four-month revenue of NT$37.114 billion soared by 109.4% from the same period of last year. TSMC attributed last month's drop in revenue to its stopping operation of plants for 4 days, for maintenance to improve wafer foundry services
