This is one of the few threads left on SI where there is some attention to substance among the "light".

People are paying 500-900 bucks for these phones... but I'm not sure Americans will right now. It depends on when the first major upgrade cycle starts in USA. Buyers for premium models in Europe and Asia are typically first-time digital phone buyers of 1996-1997. There might be a corresponding time lag in the States - meaning this segment will heat up next winter, since 1998 was the digital break-through year in USA.

In any case, the 8860 is just a warm-up act; the real action is in 8260 and 8890, being launched between now and autumn. They are the next generation miniature models with the features that justify the price premium. 8860 comes a little short on performance.

Eric - this Voda item sounds hypey. Companies in Scandinavia have already started transferring parts of their intranets into WAP phones. Insurance companies, police, maintenance firms, etc. These schemes become "international" as soon as the manager crosses from Finland to Sweden. Not sure whether that's worth a press release.

Mucho Maas; I remember saying, once, that nobody in their right mind would spend $40 on a pair of sneakers. $500 for a phone is not too much for a toy that you can write off come tax time! cb
