The customers probably purchased the 820 with an eventual move to rdram in mind - kid of the raison d'etre for buying the 820.

I disagree. I don't think anybody in his/her right mind would "upgrade" the memory. It just doesn't pay. The people who ended up with 820 + SDRAM are the most clueless bunch out there, given poor performance of this combination. The reason some people have 820+SDRAM is because they wanted say $1,500 Dell computer, and this is what Dell shipped them.
