Motorola (sound a bit Finnish, no?) loses BT contract to NT:

Wireless contract loss

Especially troubling to Cena is Motorola's loss of a contract to Nortel Networks (NT: news, msgs).

"We have been able to confirm with management that Motorola did in fact lose the BT/Cellnet contract for a third-generation wireless network to Nortel," Cena said in his research note, referring to the mobile phone arm of British Telecommunications PLC (BTY: news, msgs). "In our opinion, this contract was Motorola's to lose."

This loss raises a "cautionary flag" for the company because British Telecom turned to a new supplier of network equipment after using Motorola for both its first-generation analog and second-generation digital networks."

Cena noted that there are still two of five licensees in the United Kingdom that have not committed to a specific vendor for their 3G equipment needs, as well as the rest of Europe. "But," he said, "if Motorola could not win a long-time customer then the rest may be more of a challenge than we anticipated.
