Duncan, many are using NTAP filers for the database. This gives them the speed and reliability they want for OLTP and even lets them perform a backup (from a SNAPSHOT) without bringing down the OLTP application.

I think you are thinking about web caching for the graphics and web pages. That is completely a separate function from a "filer". That is the function of NetCache--a different product entirely, though that software can run on the same hardware/OS platform as the "filer".

Do you know if NetApp has replied to your friend's company's concerns about their filer versus a SAN?

I don't know that they spoke with NetApp about the situation. They could have, I just don't know. I'll let you know if I find out more info.

It was addressed in one of NTAP's technical papers titled "Enterprise Storage: System and Data Availability" and can be found in the technical library of their website. It's a good read and very informative.

Thanks! I'll check it out!
