It's my understanding that they do because shutting down and starting up is too costly. Assuming demand is good of course. (TM-Intel)

you are right, any fab worth its fab(ric) runs 24/7 for economic reasons.

You better believe they do!!! Even IBM manufacturing of RS/6000 and AS/400 operate 24/7. Can't wait to get paid OT when our SUNW killers take off in Q4!!
