Down South,

If you can't claim ownership of the largest market share as EMC does in the SAN arena then you claim greatest market share growth. It's been practiced for years and is standard operating procedure. I find it hard to believe that you really like EMC since you abandoned it about a year ago inn favor of NTAP. I'm sure that tens of dozens of others did the same and they too made a mistake. I hold both and continue to believe they both are exceptional in their respective spaces and will continue to prosper until and if SAN and NAS ever converge. I have admired and enjoyed your contributions, as a lurker, for a long period.

DS, the move by EMC into the NAS space reminds me of other similar moves in the past such
as the move by DEC into PCs. DEC entered the PC space for several reasons, including:

1) DEC needed to act on the requests of some customers that wanted
a turnkey solution (ie: one supplier for all network hardware).
2) DEC realized that allowing IBM to sell PCs into their big accounts
was .. inviting trouble in higher end system sales.
3) PCs sales were growing strongly in Corporate America at the time.

Now, what is your take on the following?
1) NTAP's simple "disruptive" NAS technology is threatening EMC from below.
2) NTAP would have great difficulty entering the SAN market. (not that it needs to)
3) Some view SAN and NAS as complementary technology.

My main question:
How quickly do you think EMC will be able to enter into the NAS market in a big way? If
you have any links to articles that discuss my concern above, I would appreciate the links.

thanks,
John

DS, sorry if this has already discussed in great detail in
this thread. I have scanned the thread to no avail as yet.
