Unfortunately, Eric, the shortages are real. I've contacted old associates in the semiconductor business, and they confirm that their companies have been unable to ramp up capacity quickly enough to support all of their commitments. The feared word, allocation, is back in vogue, with customers for certain product sectors being told that they will receive only a portion of their scheduled backlogs over the next quarter.

Cisco is in better shape than most, due to their buying power and well managed vendor relationships, but even they will not be immune to this latest example of poor planning on the part of the semiconductor industry.
