tejek Re: <the cost to Intel's reputation has yet to be calculated> My $.02 is that INTCs reputation is worth about $.02, at least to me. I can't believe they aren't putting out a 133 BX board! This is *NUTS*!

ted,

>> Intel's plan to fix its latest bug--which will involve swapping the motherboard and memory in affected computers--could cost the company hundreds of millions of dollars, according to analysts. That puts the MTH problem in roughly the same class as Intel's infamous 1994 Pentium "floating point bug," for which the company took a $475 million charge. >

IMHO, they might be underestimating the cost. The cost could be more than a couple of hundreds of millions, if Intel doesn't have a viable solution to MTH. They may have to upgrade the memory to DRDRAM besides the motherboard replacement.

Ironically, if it were not for the company(VIA) that's being sued by Intel, the cost of this debacle could be even higher.

Intel's deodorant is slowly losing its magic.

Ted,

"I think the cost to replace the MB's is exaggerated; the cost to Intel's reputation has yet to be calculated."

Why do you feel its exaggerated? Labor, materials (rambus?), transportation, etc. Who eats the cost of rambus? Will they use the dreaded via for those who refuse the rambus switch or make them wait for the 815? Hundreds of millions sounds about right. As for the reputation damage, well ... priceless.

"The company will replace the faulty motherboards it made
itself with the Rambus models. For those made by other companies, Intel will work to use another design or fix the problem."
"Intel said the replacements will be done by computer makers, dealers or a contractor that Intel will send out to users' offices or home."
