>a hack to make SDRAM work on the boards which were designed for RDRAM?

No, as it turns out it was a "hack" designed to make SDRAM perform extremely badly in the 820 chipset. The translator hub was more of a crippler hub.

After dozens of independent testing sites called them on it, Intel finally backed down.

(btw- the whole point of this fraud was to deceive people into thinking that Rambus' RDRAM was a lot faster than SDRAM. Which, as it turns out, it isnt. Just 4x more expensive.
