Don and all, <Sony said today that its PlayStation2 will hit U.S. stores Oct. 26 with a suggested price tag of $299.>

I have to wonder what the 32M of RDRAM costs Sony per PS2. Surely a price of $299 could never be possible if RDRAM really does cost as much as the anti-Rambus coalition claims.

Of course, that $299 price is just a loss-leader, and Sony makes up for it with royalties. But even then, Sony would not want the cost per PS2 to skyrocket out of control. And that unit not only comes with RDRAM, but with two powerful processors (CPU and graphics), DVD-ROM drive, motherboard, and supporting logic.

I had originally expected the price tag to be $350 at its American debut. Surely Sony can get away with higher prices, given potential demand. But it's decision to start at $299 tells me that perhaps each PS2 unit costs Sony much less than I originally thought.

P.S. - The anti-Rambus FUD is ebbing away, and the pro-Rambus hype is building once again. I see a rise in the medium-term future, but that's just my WAG.
