I have never been able to figure out whether most people are bad at reading expressions, vocal inflections, and mannerisms, or we have been taught to distrust our perceptions so much that we will ignore the obvious. The first candidate debate I watched in '92 among the Democrats made it apparent what sort of person Clinton was: unctuous, calculating, self- absorbed, and terribly on the make. Jerry Brown looked like a more substantial human being. In a similar way, it was apparent to me that Dukakis was off- kilter emotionally, even worse than Gore, who himself has the air of a person continually wearing a mask. Fritz Mondale was the last person the Democrats nominated to the presidency who was a reasonably well- adjusted, decent human being.
