I can't imagine the sort of brain-dead thinking that went into this deal in the first place. Corel did not have any real support having bounced up very quickly. They clearly have a long track record of fizzled ventures and that just smacks of terrible management. On top of that, Linux was a crowded market space long before Corel decided to re-label Debian's Linux and sell it -- after stripping it down and then adding a few minor utilities of their own. This was a classic Corel bandwagon effort right up there with Network Computers and Java Office Suites: all viable, all enjoying success elsewhere after Corel's fumbling effort was already in the bag as another Cowpland-driven fiasco.

Now, Cowpland still hasn't had his trial so I think it was proper not to assume that he swindled investors out of tens of millions with illegal insider trading. Let's leave that decision up to a jury, but having said that, didn't anybody question the information he was providing based his history of grandiose claims that have no underlying reality? I know for a fact I'm not the only one with that opinion. Now that the bleeding red-ink is more than just a hunch, perhaps the review of this deal will move toward reality.
