(NASDAQ: PALM) is pleased to announce that recent figures released by analyst house IDC confirmed Palm, Inc.'s position as Europe's leading provider of handheld computers (IDC, personal companion segment share, 1H 99) with 78.4 per cent of the market. The personal companion industry is characterised by small shirt-pocket sized devices that use a pen or stylus for data input. Palm, Inc. is driving the handheld market and attributes its continued success to the strong performance of the svelte looking Palm VTM handheld computer that is attractive to both the consumer and corporate markets. IDC predicts similar growth for the newly launched Palm VxTM handheld aimed at the data intensive enterprise user and the new Palm IIIcTM colour device. The figures come on the back of continuing developments at Palm over the past year including: - An ever-expanding range of applications and utilities provided by a 70,000 strong developer base. Applications include online stock trading, Internet based package tracking, medication dispensing and travel guides amongst others. - The increased use of PalmTM devices in the enterprise space including the provision of mobile access to enterprise databases and IT management solutions through partnerships with Computer Associates, IBM, Oracle, PeopleSoft, SAP, Siebel Systems, Sun Microsystems and Tivoli. - Already today, Palm supports wireless technologies such as WAP and Webclipping.
