If IBM's machines are better than Sun's machines, and IBM's OS is better than Sun's OS, IBM the 'vendor' must really SUCK to be getting their ass kicked so *soundly by Sun, yes? -JCJ

I'm curious. As an IBM insider, you probably know the answer to this question: How many people has IBM laid off in the past decade?

If you have them, annual numbers might be interesting, too.

Geez, Chicky, don't break my husband's heart. After he got home from work, he looked at the specifications for his new Sun workstation even though it won't arrive for a few weeks. While I made dinner, he chatted about how the architecture is so well balanced that you can get optimal performance etc. etc......(in contrast to Intel where a chip does one thing and another piece of equipment from another manufacturer does something else.)

You are lucky. It sounds like you have a good but easy job with IBM. You have free time to write Internet posts at work, enjoy your privileges!!!

Good Luck & Have Fun!

If you've been following this thread you'll know that, even though I think IBM is sort of a joke as an organization (I followed the rise and fall of the Power Personal Systems division very closely a few years back, not to mention enjoying the game of 'Who Wants to Be an OS Millionaire', in the sense of having a million OS'es), I don't at all discount the danger that Sun has placed itself in by being so late with the UltraSparc III. As I have said many times, this battle is Sun's to lose and they can lose it by not getting new products out. My opinion is that their stuff continues to move in volume in part because they have not much competition, but they are playing hare to the competition's tortoise right now. SUNW management has to get their act together.

You act like the game's already over, and that's far from true (it COULD have been over if SUNW had their act more together). But I acknowledge the threat, and I worry that Sun management is too caught up in posturing and vogueing these days to acknowledge it themselves.

As far as Solaris being a terrible operating system and AIX being great...aw never mind.

Chic, you did yourself in when you said:

IBM and
AMD are the only companies that really have their house in order. They have stable copper based silicon, therefore process
shrinks, etc., should be much easier than their competitors.

1. AMD has yet to ship 1 (one) production microprocessor using copper interconnect. How can they be stable yet???

2. Copper will be important at 0.13 micron, but at 0.18, it's a wash with aluminum. IBM's copper based processors run at around 450 MHz. To be fair, they do more per clock cycle than Intel or AMD. Your own AMD and Intel have shipped 1 GHz. Copper was another of IBM's high profile/publicity technology items, like SOI, that doesn't amount to a hill of beans yet.

As for Sun, they have established a fiercely loyal customer following based on a robust OS, service and pretty good RAS. Great marketing, I might add. They'll have competition, like from Wildfire and S80, McKinley based next year, but who doesn't.

As for Cisco, knock yourself out shorting it. It's never going to eclipse its all time high, according to you.

You might try to find a subject other than chips and computers in which to try to be expert around here. SI is not your Yahoo or Raging Bull wrt posters that have technology experience. What's yours, may I ask?
