"They are just adding new cufflinks to an old suit," John Davis, Sun's server marketing director, said of IBM. "They've really targeted the low-end here."

REUTERS news story (IBM Adds Workhorse Web Computers, Targets Sun :05/10/00, 8:41 p.m. ET)

The article goes on to state: "...Sun (stock: SUNW) now dominates the market for so-called midrange computers, which are defined by market research firm International Data Corp. as machines costing between $100,000 to $1 million.

While IBM classifies the new models as midrange, two of IBM's three new machines in this new line do not technically fit in the midrange category.

Only the M80, which simultaneously run from two to eight processors, is priced within that range, starting at $67,995 and topping out at just under $200,00..."

It sounds to me that these new IBM servers are targeted at the low end of the server market. The article does not point out what IBM's other software "solution" costs are and if they are even available today from IBM.

SUNW's total network solution approach and superior customer service will be hard to dislodge. I am confident our management understands the potential threat, and have developed upgrade strategies for our current customers when the new Ultra III products become available.

I like SUNW's response but it might have been more appropriate if he had said ... "copper" cufflinks to an old suit.
