Pigboy,

<<Like I have said before, EMC, not CSCO is the storage Gorilla and they are going with FC not GE at the moment. What happens from here in the next few years is kind of written in stone, not SANdcastle moats. ;-)>>

I couldn't agree with you more. The fact that CSCO is taunting GE is understandable. It really doesn't take a whole lot of resources on their part to say they can support this and that. They say they support Qos. Guess what, none of the legacy devices support Qos. Backward compatibility goes out the door. The scheme has always been to let upper layer software to ensure data integrity, i.e. TCP (layer 3). To have Qos support on the 10 gig or gazillian gig GE switches 'WILL NOT HELP' the performance of a storage network. Let alone there is still 'NO GE storage interfaces available yet'. There is no telling when and if the EMC, the SUN, the IBM, the DELL will make GE storage interfaces. Yes, these companies are interested parties. The obstacles IMO are huge. These companies have chosen FC while all the time GE/SCSI/IP were available. They have spoken. Will they change their mind? I don't see that happening soon. We will probably see claims and articles to continue this debate continuously. We need to decipher who said what and when and why as we go along. CSCO is an amateur in storage networking. What they say and claim do not weigh much on my book. Sorry.

KJ

Pigboy & K.J. Thanks for your positive thoughts on the superiority of FC over Ethernet in the SAN. It makes me rest easier when I repeatedly hear all of the reasons why FC is superior. I like to stay alert and watch for any signs of any power shifts one way or the other. It definitely looks like FC has the momentum to win at this point, and it's superior technological advantages would make it extemely difficult for a Cisco to derail it. I have learned to never underestimate CISCO, but I think it is a real wild card unless they are in the process of making some big breakthrough ahead of schedule. I hope that EMC and SUN will start to roll out the FC Switch product in force and we see even greater momentum developing. I agree that EMC and SUN are the experts in storage and have a big leg up on CISCO at this time.

Thanks,
Joe
