ATT's problems go far beyond wireless, soon most long distance calls will be made via Internet using VoIP, further reducing the cost of long distance calls.

The trend is unstoppable, that is precisely why ATT with British Telecom (last month) put up 1.4 billion into Net2Phone, with ATT also acquiring voting control.

Armstrong for several yrs now has benefited from a series of hyped up acquisitions that invariably seem to stay in the "in process" stage, thus never quite amenable to full analysis and accountability

Finally, Armstrong's bag of tricks ran out on him

His best move was not surprising: attack Gilder for bias, deflect any potential discussion concerning substantive problems facing ATT.
