Anybody know anything about Princeton Lightwave? NT's head of optical components quits to go lead them. The coup "suggests that the startup has got enormous potential - probably in helping carriers to slash costs by eliminating electrical regeneration of light signals in their networks."

From Chase H&Q

PIRI is the market share leader in arrayed waveguide (AWG) which is used primarily as a way to multiplex and demultiplex optical signals, but has other applications.

While thin-film filters (TTFs) are the most prevalent mux/demux technology, we expect AWGs to gain share and grow into a multi-billion dollar market as this technology becomes more mature and system channel densities continue to increase.

We believe the PIRI acquisition is SDL's best to date. PIRI is a leader in teh AWG market and the acquisition enables SDLI to establish a presence in an emerging, technologically strategic space.

Additionally, the deal is immediately accretive. Although we are not changing our model until the deal closes, we believe PIRI could add $125-150M in revenue and $0.12-0.15 in EPS in FY01.

We reiterate our BUY on SDLI shares.
