That's what I'm telling him, too.

He says he can't even bring himself to look at his 401K, and he's very angry at how much was "left on the table" in his taxable brokerage account....I tell him he is ONE OF THE LUCKY ones. He doubled his money even after the sell off, but all he can focus on right now is how stupid he feels for not preserving his gain.

I also realized something else, too, and this ties into your statement about taxes. I did MUCH BETTER in our IRA accounts. I had no worries about tax consequences so I was much quicker to take profits. I let my taxable account "ride" longer into the correction (until I realized the bear was upon me) and it cost me A LOT. So I realized just how "tax averse" I really am, and will make certain that it doesn't enter into my investment strategy in the future. I realize that I was also influencing my son along those lines, and even now he's complaining about the big tax bill he will have next year.<g>
