ZLC did very well.Stronger sales boost Zale earnings Jewelry retailer's per0share earnings rise 76 percent By Ted Griffith, CBS MarketWatch Last Update: 10:05 AM ET May 11, 2000 NewsWatch DALLAS (CBS.MW) -- Driven by a nearly 30 percent jump in revenue, Zale Corp. topped earnings expectations in its fiscal third quarter and increased earnings per share by 76 percent. 5/11/2000 10:01:44 AM ET Dallas-based Zale (ZLC: news, msgs) reported Thursday that its earnings per share rose to 30 cents, compared with 17 cents in the year-earlier quarter. Analysts polled by First Call projected a gain of 26 cents per share. Zale shares rose 1 9/16 to 42 7/8 Thursday. The Dallas-based jewelry retailer reported sales for the third quarter, ended April 30, were $361.3 million compared to $280.7 million last year. "We are extremely pleased with these results which highlight our consistency in financial performance and the foundation upon which we will continue to build," Zale Chairman Robert J. DiNicola said in a statement. "These results further strengthen our commitment to our long-term growth strategies." Zale operates 1,360 jewelry stores in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. The company also has online sales. Analysts surveyed by First Call project Zale will have a $3.02 per share gain for the year, up from a gain of $2.21 in 1999.
