More crap on the Brazil trade war, Globe says Alcan, Nortel potential trade war victims Nortel Networks Limited NT Shares issued 1,354,467,391 May 10 close $74.50 Thu 11 May 2000 In the News See Alcan Aluminium Ltd (AL) In the News The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, May 11, edition that Brazil warned yesterday that an "irrational escalation" of its aerospace trade war with Canada could hurt several Canadian companies. The Globe's Heather Schoffield writes that the Brazilian government says other sectors that were not involved in the initial dispute should expect to be drawn into the battle. An Alcan Aluminium spokesperson says, "Obviously, from our standpoint, it is something we should start worrying about." Nortel Networks, another large Canadian investor, would not comment directly on the Brazilian statements but urged both governments to avoid a trade war. The World Trade Organization told Brazil this week that its cheap regional jet financing program must be nixed. Within hours of the decision, Ottawa, under pressure from Bombardier, pulled out of high-level talks with Brazil over how to resolve the aerospace dispute, and said it was asking the WTO for permission to hit Brazil with $5-billion in trade sanctions.
