More on Omnitracs

There are 350,000 Omnitracs out there. Correction to my previous post,Omnitracs communicate using satellites. Qualcomm also has a service called trailertracs. Omnitracs is installed in the tractor cabin. For every tractor in a trucking fleet, there are 5-10 trailers. So you can imagine the size of the market.

Currently trailers are not widely tracked. So if a trucker leaves the trailer in a parking lot for delivery or for pick-up by another trucker, the trailer is not tracked. A trailer could contain hundreds of thousand dollars of goods of inventory. Companies don't want to lose track of that inventory. Therefore the Trailertrac. Trailertrac could be a much cheaper than the Omnitracs. It could be polled once or twice a day to track its location.

I think Qualcomm is using Orbcomm for the trailertrac currently. Orbcomm is an LEO, low data transfer constellation. Don't be too surprised, Qualcomm could shift to Globalstar in years to come.
