the subtle shift from desktops to portable units must have escaped Fleckenstein.

even NOKia states portable units will continue to grow at 50% plus per annum - and they're not talking simply cell phones but rather 'cell' units or devices

yet it is possible for the desktop unit to experience a substantive rebound in the latter half of the year - carried along by the continued strong sales in portable units and servers

europe was up 17% for Dell - all others in the 7% to 14% range - makes them #1 in growth for Europe

the growth in the Americas was much stronger than expected. with the uptick from Brazil it should grow even faster. Brazil, you may know, has over 2/3rds the land mass of comparable continental U.S. with a population expected to exceed 300 million by 2005 (up from 170). only 8% of its population is currently computer literate; that number is expected to grow to 50% by 2005. that would translate into a computer user base nearly the size of the U.S. in a matter of 5 years.

the PC remains in a state of metamorphis; maybe those who do not believe such do not fully appreciate the changes occurring. the notion that it has died is possibly now as extinct as IBM's retail PC division.

a .02 gain from investments is no less a gain - whether it comes from sales or investments is irrelevant given $7 billion in the bank. that $7 billion represents future growth
