John,

I'm sure many of the people on this thread could do better than the gov't in managing their retirement funds.

But the government does not manage the retirement funds. The government just takes from the young gives it to the old. The "trust fund" is peanuts, compared to future liabilities.

I think it is time that soc. sec. was either scrapped, or converted to a real retirement system, where people during their working age actually accumulate funds for their retirement.

I agree with you, and I'm sure many of the people on this thread could do better than the gov't in managing their retirement funds.
But, soc. sec. wasn't set up to provide for those who were able to provide for themselves. It was, correct me if I'm wrong on this,
set up as something of a safety net.

I think the expected returns for social security "investments" amount to about 2% per year. You don't have to be an expert stock trader to do better then that with very little risk.

John, re:...set up as something of a safety net...

Unfortunately, it seems like a lot of people think the SocSec safety net should keep them from falling at all, whereas it really was set up to be only about 3 feet off the ground.
