The U.S. format promoted by Qualcomm Inc (NasdaqNM:QCOM - news) would enable DDI to cut costs by taking advantage of existing infrastructure used by its current cdmaOne mobile phones, also developed by Qualcomm, analysts said. DDI's main cellphone competitors, NTT Docomo and Japan Telecom's J-Phone plan to use the W-CDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) technology promoted by Docomo and supported by European carriers. DDI is set to merge in October with KDD Corp , Japan's largest international telecoms carrier, and unlisted cellphone service provider IDO Corp.
