When Steve O. was posting here in late 98 and early 99 we used to see a lot of these after close big block prints. I believe your explanation is right on. Steve talked many times how a very large order would be filled. A big order would get bought throughout the day in smaller chunks so to not disrupt the market. The MM/broker would then print the trade to the buyer as a block shortly after the close. We saw this happen here many many times about a year and a half ago in this stock between price 3 and 4.
