Demand for Chips Surpasses Production
May 16, 2000 (SEOUL) -- With the world semiconductor market suffering from lack of production, Korea's chip makers, including Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. and Hyundai Electronic Industries Co., Ltd., are expected to reap unexpected profits in 2000.

Dataquest, IDC and other market research firms had predicted that production would fall short of demand during the fourth quarter of this year, but due to the rapidly expanding wireless handset and PC markets, demand for semiconductors is surpassing supply.

The supply shortage of flash memory chips, used in MP3 players and wireless handsets, will continue for the next 12 months, the research companies said.
