Some stunning volatility numbers from the Leuthold Group:

YTD 2000

89% of all trading days have experienced NASDAQ moves of 1% or more.

40% of all trading days have experienced NASDAQ moves of 3% or more.

APRIL 2000

95% of all trading days have experienced NASDAQ moves of 1% or more.

55% of all trading days have experienced NASDAQ moves of 3% or more.

42% of all trading days have experienced SPX moves of 1% or more.

The Leuthold crew have a daily volatility database extending back to 1971. For what it is worth, since 1971, the NASDAQ has experienced 3% daily moves only 1% of the entire time. Moreover, since 1971, there have been 9 years where there were no 3% moves for any day during the year at all.
