OTLooking through the buyers guides and ratings, it is confusing and overwhelming for us novices. From a users perspective do you have any comments on which features or characteristics you find more important than others?

I presume you mean for a digital camera?

For me, the following are the minimum for a digital camera.
1.Must have at least 2MPixels and 3 is better.
2.Must have a glass viewfinder (otherwise, be prepared to carry a 100 batteries with you at all times)
3.Must have CF capability (so I can use my existing CF, and for capacity)
4.Must have optical zoom (digital zoom is a waste of time, you can do that on your PC later and you lose resolution).
5. Must have a reasonable element of manual control.
6 Must be small (so I can take it with me easily. I have a really nice large and heavy 35mm I hardly used even before digital because its just too much hassle to carry it)
7. Must fit my budget.

Now, these are all my personal reqs for my next camera, since my current one doesnt satisfy point (1).
Also, (7) normally clashes with everything else!

However, for whats its worth, the camera that fits best with all the above criteria for me is the Canon S20. It is about $750. I will probably buy one within the next 2 or 3 months unless something better comes up. There is also the Epson that Aus has that I think is a bit cheaper and is about 2MP (The Canon is 3MP). The model no of the Epson is 850z I think but if you look back in these threads you'll see messages from Aus about what it is and it looks like it takes pretty good pictures you can look at them on the web to check.

There is also a new Ricoh camera that looks pretty good but I think it takes smartmedia so that rules it out for me as I dont want to have to buy a lot of new cards. I think you can end up being locked into whatever memory format you currently have. (Which says to me that the new Sony cameras will mostly go to new users rather than people upgrading)

I would also suggest you check out rec.photo.digital.
If you read that for a few days you'll soon get a feeling for whats hot and whats not.

Hope this helps
Joe

I am starting on my first project after the meeting now...

...updating the PhotoPoint site.

I did not want to be too intrusive with my photography during Dr. Harari's presentation, so the picture quality is not the best. Also, I did not want to poke around too much as the corporate headquarters, so I will post the few pictures I took as a casual observer...
