Dems and Reps agree on increasing the pace of Federal land grab:

The House yesterday approved legislation that would dramatically expand the amount of money set aside annually for conservation and land purchases, a rare example of Republicans and Democrats coming together on environmental protection.

Supporters described the measure as one of the House's most significant environmental actions in years: It would earmark billions of dollars generated annually from offshore oil drilling fees for a host of environmental activities, including the creation of urban parks, recreational areas and historical preservation. Congress has typically spent about $400 million annually for such purposes; the new bill would set aside $2.8 billion a year.

House Resources Committee Chairman Don Young (R-Alaska) said the plan would help preserve open spaces so future generations of Americans "can hunt, fish, be alone and meditate."
