I've been playing with the LD rate calculator at

globalstarusa.com

and comparing its rates with a competitive LD service
10-10-220

10220.com

Basically, a satellite mode call to an international
destination costs 1.79 per minute plus a LD premium that
varies depending on destination. This table compares that
premium with the 10-10-220 charge below:

Destination G* LD surcharge 10-10-220 rate
UK 0.10 0.25-0.30
France 0.18 0.19
Italy 0.18 0.19-0.20
Romania 0.85 0.25-0.30
Russia 1.55 0.16-0.30
India 1.05 0.80
China 0.55 0.29-0.40
Saudi Arabia 0.85 1.11
Australia 0.18 0.19-0.20
Algeria 0.75 0.74
S. Africa 0.55 0.53
Brazil 0.55 0.29-0.40
Argentina 0.75 0.29-0.40
Mexico 0.35 0.19-0.30

Except for Eastern Europe/Russia, all the LD premium rates I
checked were within a few pennies/minute of 10-10-220's LD
charge. Several locations were in fact cheaper. And to get
the 10-10-220 rates shown above, one generally has to talk
for at least 10 minutes.

I'm not sure it's very important for most people (I don't
think I've ever used my cell phone to call internationally)
but this table shows that G*USA is at least not gouging

for LD.
