Drugs did not start with rock and roll, they were part of the jazz scene as well. My father-in-law, who had a lovely tenor, spent a few months with a band, not even pure jazz, but more "big band" style, after high school, and was shocked to discover the amount of drug taking, drinking, and whoring that went on among the musicians. He got out, rather than have so hectic a life. The issue was music, not drugs.......
