Patricia - A firewall is software that prevents unauthorized access to your machine. It monitors all communications between your machine and the outside world. If any unknown process attempts access to your machine, it will block that access and record and report it. A good firewall, and a good anti-virus program will go a long way to making your life on the net less complicated.
