Re: what do you mean with the word "sandbagging"???

cheryl,

You know, not putting all the cards on the table? Like how AMD said to expect 1 Ghz at the end of 2000, but released it in early March. I think 64-bit 1 Ghz will be pretty slow in 2002, so hopefully SUNW has bigger plans but is not publicly stating them (IE, sandbagging).

how about the rest of the spec????

Like I said, with big iron a lot more matters besides just the clock speed. It will be interesting to see some benchmarks.

FYI- If you guys don't know who Dirk Meyer is, here's how is was described to me:

While I don't know him personally, it is my understanding is that Dirk's history is along these lines.

1) The first processor that Dirk was a lead architect of was the first DEC Alpha. It was immediately the fastest processor in the world.

2) The second processor that Dirk was the lead on was the Alpha 21264 (third generation Alpha). The second generation Alpha that Dirk was not in charge of was not impressive. The third generation that Dirk _was_ in charge of is incredible.

3) I believe he was lured from DEC to AMD sometime between 3-4 years ago. It was the time that the Athlon project was beginning. I believe he was again the lead architect.

It is my understanding that currently at AMD he is overseeing most of AMD's new processors and chipsets.

See ya later in the year, hopefully we have some benchmarks of the UltraSparc III by then?
