Jacob - re: At some point, it will become impossible for them to ignore reality any longer, and their confidence will abruptly crack.

First you assume they are ignoring reality... and second that therefore at some point reality will come calling and they will "crack".

Your discussion is very self-serving. It seems to be based on the notion that no one wins against "big Government", and that anyone who stands up for their principles (whether or not those principles deserve defending) is in denial.

Did you grow up in a totalitarian country? I can't imagine you grew up in the U.S. or if you did, you must have ignored reality even more forcefully than you accuse MSFT of doing.

My mother enjoyed letting the air out of politicians and bureaucrats, and went after everyone from local government to U.S. senators. She made a lot of them mad. They tried all kinds of ways to shut her up. It only got her to be more energetic, to organize more support, and to press her points harder.

I didn't always agree with her causes - my friends called her "crusader rabbit"... but I admired her spunk and fearlessness. So did some of the politicians she skewered, and she eventually got to be pretty close to some of them - the ones who took the time to listen to her issues and take action.

Also, your assumption about whether restrictions will be imposed is pure speculation at this point. Once again you are trying to paint the bogeyman.

I bet you're one of those people who would not take a legitimate but unusual tax deduction for fear that "the man" is gonna get you. I have been audited 5 times, and each time I came out paying less than before the audit. If the IRS is going to use up my time I want to be paid for it. The last time I got the same team who had done my return once before, and they were laughing about it - "how much is it going to cost us this time?". The answer was, quite a bit - by going through the numbers in detail, I found a lot of places where I had just left money on the table. The feds are just people, they get bad attitudes, make mistakes, and ignore reality too.

In this case, it looks to me like it is the DOJ which has been cut adrift from the real world, not MSFT.
