Joe, I agree with you but the problem has to be articulated in a way that people can begin to grasp the common sense of the problems in the way the system was constructed. This board represents a high intellectual level yet many don't see the problems and thus don't readily accept the solutions. That is why I referenced the history and some choices that were rejected.

If you look at what has been invested by an employee and by his employer and you look at what that employee takes out in retirement you can indeed talk in terms of return on investment. Perhaps if people look at the system in this manner they will see the absurdity in the basic structure. If you look at what one gets from the system in terms of return on investment you can then compare alternatives and those win hands down. When the money that goes to the system would provide a better retirement if invested in a passbook savings account, it is pretty sad. And I still submit that building a larger pool of funds is better for everyone than not.
