No, subject of short interest has been a big subject on RMBS thread for months. See message #33004 on 10/27/99 and numerous messages on short interest thereafter.

Would agree however that current effort of GSTRF is better thought out and more discussed. RMBS short interest peaked in Dec'99 at 8.923 M shares (short ratio of 7.25) and shares short stayed high for Jan'00 (8.76M shares & short ratio of 6.82) and Feb (8.83 M shares with short ratio dropping to 4.51).

At peak of shares short RMBS had roughly 35% of shares outstanding short. GSTRF using April numbers had roughly 26% short with a short ratio of 6.19.
