Video Gamers Are Sociable Breed, U.S. Survey Says

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - They're not all loners sitting in the dark in front of their computer screens.

Most American computer and video game users play with their friends and family, according to a survey by the industry this week that seeks to confound the picture of isolated teenagers playing alone in their bedrooms.

The survey of 1,621 households that have either video game consoles or computer entertainment software showed that 59 percent play electronic games with their parents, siblings or friends.

``There are many reasons why 60 percent of all Americans -- about 145 million people -- play computer and video games, and the fact that they are a social activity is chief among them,'' said Douglas Lowenstein, president of the Interactive Digital Software Association that represents U.S. video and computer games publishers.

Politicians and social commentators have sought to pin part of the blame for a U.S. spate of violence carried out by schoolchildren on an addiction to anti-social video games and bloodthirsty movies.

Some 35 percent of those questioned for the survey said video and computer games were the most fun entertainment activity, way above watching television or going to the movies. More than three-quarters of users loved the challenge of such games, and 55 percent said they were stress relievers.

The survey showed that only 28 percent of frequent users of computer games were under 18 years old, while 42 percent were over the age of 35.
