And why didn't people have the right to say: "Hell no, I won't go"????? Where was their freedom? Am I free if I am forced to defend South Vietnam against my will?

They did and do have the right.

BUT

Because Kennedy was a part of America's anti-Communist left. He accepted all the communist values but thought that he could implement those values in humane manner. (Which is impossible)

Kennedy believed that

"To each according to his need, from each according to his ability"

America and other UN countries had a lot of men that with western military power could annihilate the communists. My dad had his self and the Vietnamese needed him-so Kennedy/Johnson/Nixon took him. The Vietnamese needed, it was my dad's duty to provide.

The acceptance of altruism/socialism has been growing in the US.
