Well, the Australian dollar spent most of 1999 in the $us0.64-66 range but dropped to $us0.58 so far this year, so that is really what I think you are seeing on the chart.

Remember: Australian producers (aka the largest hedgers in the world) love to sell gold forward at $A500.
