Re: EETimes article: BRCM launches single-chip cable set-top IC

Hi Keith,

I hate to interrupt your presumptive pleasure, but... something of actual merit is coming out of my 'puter. Omigod.

eoenabled.com

Seems to me to be a very well written article. I learned that DAVIC standards are ATM protocol based. Who knew?

It seems that these IC's may be heading toward the secondary set-top box manufacturers. Anyone care to comment on how substantial an advance this might be? Seems that at 32bit MIPS running at 81 Mhz, the BCM7100 is meeting the middle of the market and not the high end. Thus much greater volume of components shipped. Should be a winner with a lot of MSOs, tight fisted bunch that they are.

Do we have any experts here who can compare and contrast the BCM7100 solution to that of other set-top IC solutions? I'm trying to wipe the Cherry Garcia off my fingers and can't seem to find the right page....

Finally, without providing a head-end solution, is this a chip without a real place in the pantheon? See, I told you I was clueless. But I try to ask a few relevant questions from time to time.

Ciao, Ray
