I do not know how to calculate the well-to-wheel energy efficiencies directly, but I think we can short-cut this calculation to show that Hydrogen-from-fossil-gas used in a fuel cell can be more economical than the gasoline/ICE scheme -- and "greener" also.

In Post 4816, there is data that indicates Hydrogen produced at the well site costs, in units of BTU provided, about the same as gasoline at the refinery (circa 1996, when oil was cheap). But, (1) Hydrogen used in a fuel cell is much more efficient in producing mechanical work than an ICE; and (2) the only significant pollutant, CO2, from the Hydrogen/FC scheme can be sequestered for geologic time periods.
