Eisner: Thoughtless e-mail a threat to companies, society
LOS ANGELES (AP) --

Misunderstood e-mails are causing problems at Walt Disney Co., Chairman Michael Eisner told University of Southern California graduates on Friday.

Eisner, speaking at USC's commencement ceremony, said Disney isn't alone. E-mail written in anger or haste can wreak havoc within a corporation and in society generally, he said.

"I have noticed of late that the intensity of emotions inside our competitive company is higher than usual. I am convinced this is because of e-mail. Every fight that goes on seems to start with a misunderstanding over an e-mail," Eisner said.

"... I have come to believe that, if anything will bring about the downfall of a company, or maybe even a country, it is blind copies of e-mails that should never have been sent in the first place," he said.

Eisner said he isn't against e-mail. But writers need to take care that their e-mail messages are clear and cordial, he said. He told students he decided to make e-mail the subject of his address after losing files because of the "Love Bug" virus.

The program released last week sent a flood of e-mails through computer systems worldwide. Experts have estimated the cyber attack may cost up to $10 billion, primarily in lost productivity.

Love Bug e-mails arrived with a subject line "ILOVEYOU." Opening the attachment destroys saved filed and sends the virus to other addresses in the victims' computers.

Eisner has committed his own e-mail gaffes. Because of a typo in the address line, he inadvertently sent Disney's earnings report to an ABC News employee before its public release last week. Disney owns ABC. Eisner was alerted to his mistake the next day when the baffled employee sent a reply asking why he sent her the report.

Eisner said he laughed about the mistake, but noted that it could have caused problems with the federal Securities and Exchange Commission if someone had gotten the report and traded on Disney stock in advance of its public release.

"Of course, the SEC wouldn't have laughed if the earnings had leaked out or someone at ABC News had traded in our stock. In that case, I'd be e-mailing this speech from Lompoc," he said, referring to the location of a federal prison on the Central California coast.
