I think I saw the movie you describe. However, you left out a few pertinent facts. The boy (Kal-el) and the father (Jor-el) both arrive on Earth at about the same time from a planet that is about to disintegrate (much like the upcoming fate of the mother's city in the treatment you posted).

Before hooking up with the alcoholic mother, Jor-el strikes up a friendship with the grandparents, Ma and Pa Kent. After he "dies," he still appears to the boy from time to time at the Fortress of Solitude, located in the Frozen North. It is during one of these visits that the boy is urged by his father to go live with the Kents.

So your example is different, since the father recommends that boy live elsewhere, and the Mother (portrayed by Britney Spears in her acting debut) is in agreement.

It is a warm, heart rending tale of a mother-who-lives-in-an-urban-ghetto-realizing-the-boy-who-is-alien-to-this-planet-anyway-should-go-to-live-with-doting-quasigrandparents-provided-they-promise-to-expose-the-boy-to-no-strange-fishermen.

If you can catch it on TV today, it is perfect Mother's Day fare.
