I feel it is more the mechanism of the connection to the services that makes WAP (or Phone.com) more tolerable on CDMA today then GSM and why GPRS is needed to fully realize WAP in the GSM world. Doing a circuit switched call on GSM is a pretty painful process when you're just trying to get a stock quote, etc.. CDMA operators that implemented QNC (Quick Net Connect) offer packet-like connections through the IWF infrastructure (still circuit switched over the air) and give a reasonable response from the WAP/phone.com server (usually 3 seconds to connect). GPRS will provide a much better user experience than current GSM, but in reality will only make it as good as cdma (w/ QNC or IS-707 packet) offers today at 14.4. The GPRS operators will most likely limit the WAP calls to a single channel connection.

You are absolutely correct that as bandwidth increases, the need for WAP translations decreases...and you'll also see msft's presence in the WAP forum really begin to move everyone to XML IMO.

Best to you,

Rox
