Optus's extant satellite service, called MobileSat is very much akin to AMSC's in the US: it has been in operation for a number of years using a GEO and provides coverage to 100% of the continent and up to 200 kilometres out to sea (http://www.cwo.com.au/codocs/ind_devp_9798.doc).

[My prediction is MobileSat in AU has been as successful as AMSC in the US, i.e. not very and that Vodafone Globalstar's AU service will likely be about as successful as Airtouch Vodafone's service in the US, i.e. not very].

It looks like Optus will "upgrade" (replace?) MobileSat with the launch of C1 in 2002 that will enhanced capacity to deliver next generation direct-to-home TV and internet, telephony and high bandwidth data communications throughout Australia and into Asia (http://www.cwo.com.au/newsroom/1,1450,129,00.html).
