I don't think having an arsenal at my disposal would make me feel any more free. If a despotic regime were to arise here, I think the odds are good that such a regime would readily convince many citizens (including gun owners) that the extreme measures taken by the dictator were "necessary to preserve order", etc. Despite their oppression, neither Hitler nor Stalin nor Mao ever lacked for faithful servants, true believers, and citizen informants.

Arms won't help you if your fellow armed citizens have been duped by a dictator who dresses up as a saviour.

I believe that you have hit on the crux of the matter. Big brother government has played upon this fact to pass laws that they have no right to be involved. What can we do to stop this trend?
