Jacob - I'm sure you're right about "teasing the bear" - I could take a lower profile and avoid the "red flags". But I have actually been pretty well paid for my time in dealing with the IRS. If your records are good and well organized, you can get through the process in a day. And the people I worked with were pretty even-handed, so when they saw something I had overlooked which was to my advantage, they pointed it out. The improvement in my tax bill exceeded what I would normally make in a day by quite a bit.

While the analogy is not quite accurate when transferred to a corporation, I still think that there are important principles being preserved which I as a stockholder in mostly high tech companies would like to see defended. I am not planning on selling any time soon, so it's the long term climate for growth and success that I want to see preserved, not the earnings over the short haul.
