Japan Selects cdma2000 for Third-Generation Services; cdma2000 Momentum
Continues to Escalate as Result of Successful 3G Trials Worldwide

cdma2000 Services Will Make Commercial Debut This Year
Updated 9:09 AM ET May 15, 2000

COSTA MESA, Calif. (BUSINESS WIRE) - Late last week, CDMA Development Group (CDG) member
company DDI Corporation, Japan's second-largest wireless carrier, formally announced its plans to use
cdma2000 for third-generation (3G) wireless services.

cdma2000 phase one, known as CDMA 1X, lays the foundation for a broad array of high-speed wireless
information services. In addition to cdma2000 global trials, CDMA 1X will be the first IMT 3G standard
to make a commercial debut as SK Telecom in Korea announced plans to introduce 3G services this
year.

Recently, Bell Mobility, Nortel Networks, QUALCOMM, Samsung and Sprint PCS successfully
completed a series of 3G wireless calls using CDMA 1X technology. Telstra, Verizon and LG Telecom
are also conducting CDMA 1X trails.

"The CDG believes that DDI's decision to use cdma2000 for 3G was a natural given the company's
success with cdmaOne," said Perry LaForge, executive director for the CDG. "CDMA brings the future
to us today. The CDG and its members have maintained an aggressive schedule for 3G implementation.
Our successful CDMA 1X trials have proven that the technology will be the first wireless standard to
allow for the delivery of next-generation services."

CDMA 1X standard provides 144 kbps packet data in a mobile environment and significantly higher
speeds in a fixed environment. Other features available with CDMA 1X are a two-fold increase in both
voice capacity and standby time; advanced packet data services; and greatly extended battery life. All
of these capabilities will be available in the 1.25 MHz channel in existing spectrum, allowing all
operators to take advantage of these 3G capabilities without the burden of re-farming or securing new
spectrum. While CDMA 1X is evolved from cdmaOne, under the family of systems umbrella emerging
from the IMT-2000 work of the ITU, 1X provides a viable growth path for all operators, regardless of
their 2G technology platform. CDMA2000 provides advanced wireless Internet access and data
services to the increasingly sophisticated wireless market.

The CDG recently completed a number of live webcasts detailing the advantages of cdmaOne and its
evolution to cdma2000. These webcasts have included prominent industry executives such as Dr. Irwin
Jacobs, Chairman and CEO of QUALCOMM, Craig Farrill, CTO of Vodafone AirTouch Cellular, Keith
Paglush, VP technology of SPRINT PCS, and Dave Murashige, VP of Nortel Networks. These webcasts
can be found at www.digevent.com.

The CDMA Development Group is a non-profit trade association formed to foster the worldwide
development, implementation and use of cdmaOne. The 115 member companies of the CDG include
many of the world's largest wireless operators and equipment manufacturers. The primary activities of
the CDG include development of cdmaOne features and services, public relations, education and
seminars, regulatory affairs and international support. Currently, there are more than 500 individuals
working within various CDG subcommittees on cdmaOne-related matters. For more information about
